Sedges: Carex (The Illustrated Flora of Illinois)
Published in Hardcover by Southern Illinois Univ Pr (Txt) (March, 1999)
Authors: Robert H. Mohlenbrock and Paul Nelson
Average review score:

Great Illustrations
Very useful book. Excellent illustrations. If you want to know what sedges are, I give it five stars.

Mohlenbrock Carex
Mohlenbrock's addition to the illustrated floras available in the midwest is most welcome. This volume describes the taxonomy and illustrates each species of Carex found in Illinois. The application to adjacent states is relatively easy since the genus is widespread. The book provides an update of the Carex section of the Gleason New Britton and Brown Illustrated Flora which is now out of print. Mohlenbrock's Illinois Flora was not illustrated and given the complexity of the genus, the clear diagrams and location maps make an arduous taxonomic task somewhat, I emphasize somewhat, easier. If you are working in wetlands this volume will be of special interest to you and should be a part of your office collection.

Self Realization in Kashmir Shaivism : The Oral Teachings of Swami Lakshmanjoo
Published in Paperback by State Univ of New York Pr (March, 1995)
Authors: Lakshman, John Hughes, and Lance E. Nelson
Average review score:

Swami Lakshmanjoo is a real teacher.
This book is a breath of fresh air in today's world of yoga and spirituality. It is unusual to read from a teacher who has not only gained intellectual understanding of a particular system, but has also experienced the reality of its practices.

The first chapter 'Fifteen Verses of Wisdom' went straight over my head, which shows I still lack understanding in this area. The chapter 'Talks on Practice' reveals the mechanics of meditation according to the system of Kashmir Shaivism. I found it clear and insightful. This was balanced by the chapter 'Talks on Discipline' which shows that Lakshmanjoo has the integrity to give clear guidelines to the spiritual aspirant on how one should conduct oneself on the spiritual path.

Finally in his last chapter 'The Secret Knowledge of Kundalini' Swami Lakshmanjoo gives real insight into the mechanics of the mysterious subject of kundalini. To date I have found other material on this subject to be rather nebulous and mere fantasy, based in the vivid imaginations of so called gurus and well read authors. Swami Lakshmanjoo takes this mysterious subject out of the category of fantasy and clearly defines how kundalini functions. His intimate description of the various modes of rising of kundalini clearly shows that he has experienced this himself.

This book is a revelation for the earnest seeker on the spiritual path.

kashmir review
It is the first book of kashmir philosophy which covers all the aspects of the title. It is the complete informative book about pre-history age of kashmir.

Sex! The Thinking Person's Moral Guide
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (May, 2003)
Author: Joan A. Nelson
Average review score:

It opened my eyes.
This book should be available to everyone who has thought about or is in (or out) of a sexual situation. The hidden (moral) images out parents, preachers, teachers and other mentors left us with can be devastating if not put into proper perspective.
Finally, here is a book that explores those ancient myths about Adam & Eve and lets us pick and choose the right way to have a moral, yet sensuous, sexually fulfilling life with the person(s) of our choice.
I gave a copy to my grown daughter and apologized for not teaching her these things years ago. Wish I had read it as teenager.

I wish I had read this book years ago.
This book opened my eyes to a whole range of different ways of looking at sex. I saw things much more clearly than ever. It made me wish I had read it many years (and many relationships) ago. In fact, I am ordering a copy for my daughter.
You will be reassured that you are not weird, or perverted, when you imagine what it would be like to try something new and exciting. The author covers just about everything imaginable in a persons sexual desires.
It also gives you a view of how organized religion may have shamed you into suppressing your desires, made you feel guilty, and how you can overcome those doubts and perform to your highest ability.
Share this book with someone you love (or at least desire) and see what a difference it will make.

Show & Tell
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Harlequin (01 April, 2003)
Author: Rhonda Nelson
Average review score:

Ultimate pleasure -- Very highly recommended
Tantric sex, touted to bring ultimate pleasure, inspires investigative reporter Knox Webber into action. He is a show-and-tell journalist, producing facts and urging the public to draw their own conclusions. Know dismisses the value of tantric sex as the latest new age hype taught by aging hippies to fleece the public. So he arranges a weekend workshop and insures the one woman in the world immune to his charm accompany him.

Savannah Reeves has carefully cultivated an image of being competitive and hostile toward one Knox in an effort to maintain her distance. She knows the outcome of this weekend investigation could be nothing short of disastrous, but when her editor insists that she goes, Savannah reluctantly agrees. When the Tantric energy sizzles between them, Knox and Savannah discover that seduction begins with the simplest of life's pleasures.

Author Rhonda Nelson's gift for daring adventure sparkles in SHOW & TELL. Competitive edge brings Knox and Savannah together, but it is only personal vulnerabilities that allow them to create something more. Depth of characterization and fun plot will hold readers glued to the page, possibly inspiring their own tantric indulgences. Indeed, the phrase SHOW & TELL takes on a whole new meaning with talented Rhonda Nelson's pen. A sensual treat, SHOW & TELL comes very highly recommended.

This one will make you sweat!
Rhonda Nelson has done it again with the hottest blaze ever! To tell you the details would give away the steamy plot so I'll refrain. I will warn you, however, this book is not for the faint of heart! Cudos, Ms. Nelson!

A Silent Siren Song
Published in Hardcover by Cooper Square Press (November, 2000)
Authors: Al P. Nelson and Mel R. Jones
Average review score:

A story of Hollywood's silent screen era
In A Silent Siren Song: The Aitken Brothers' Hollywood Odyssey, 1905-1926, Al Nelson and Mel Jones effectively collaborate to tell a story of Hollywood's silent screen era as represented by Harry and Roy Aitken, two of film history's most innovative movie makers and their cadre of the great directors and stars of the day. This notables ranged from D.W. Griffith, Charlie Chaplin, and Mary Pickford, to Lillian Gish, Mabel Normand, "Fatty" Arbuckle, and Douglas Fairbanks Sr. A Silent Siren Song traces the Aitkens' brothers rise from small-time film distributors to the captaining of a genuine movie empire and the production of silent era classics from the Keystone Kops to "Birth of a Nation". This is an impressive, informative, and very welcome contribution to personal and academic film history collections.

Unknown Masters of the Silent Screen
You have heard of Warner Brothers. Have you ever heard of the Aitken brothers? Probably not, but their innovations in the motion picture business before talkies helped make Hollywood what it is today. They are often left out of the movie history books, so that even silent film fans may not know who they are. This need no longer be the case. _A Silent Siren Song: The Aitken Brothers' Hollywood Odyssey, 1905 -1926_ (Cooper Square Press), by Al P. Nelson and Mel R. Jones, provides a biography of the brothers, who produced more than 2,500 films, including some legendary ones.

These were, amazingly, Wisconsin farm boys. They knew they wanted to do something more lucrative and exciting than milk cows, and in 1905 when Roy went to a nickelodeon in Chicago to see _The Great Train Robbery_, he sent for Harry to come see it, too. They saw that movies were a business with a future, and set up their own nickelodeon. _A Silent Siren Song_ wonderfully traces the arc of the brothers' career, buying nickelodeons, then running a film exchange to rent films to other peoples' nickelodeons, then distributing films to Europe, then producing films themselves. They helped the careers of Fatty Arbuckle, Charlie Chaplain, the Gish sisters, and many more famous stars, but they knew to promote their directors as well. Their most famous director was D. W. Griffith, and he made for them the first superpicture, _Birth of a Nation_ in 1915. A smash success, it was followed by _Intolerance_, a critical success, and an expensive commercial flop. The Aitkens, for many reasons detailed in this careful book, could not survive as outsiders in Hollywood, and returned to Wisconsin.

Harry and Roy were happy when they were on top and unembittered when they had to head back home. This book shows just how innovative they were. Besides making the first superpicture, they established worldwide branches for film distribution; they were the first to use public relations and full-page ads for films; they engaged the finances of Wall Street to make movies. An engaging, revealing work, _A Silent Siren Song_ gives us back some film history we lost in letting us meet the Aitkens. It is a happy overview of movie production, distribution, and display when the movies were just beginning.

Small Hours of the Night: Selected Poems of Roque Dalton
Published in Paperback by Curbstone Press (September, 1996)
Authors: Roque Dalton, Hardie St. Martin, Jonathan Cohen, James Graham, Ralph Nelson, Paul Pines, David Unger, Rogue Dalton, and David Graham
Average review score:

Small Hours of the Night, Selected Poems of Roque Dalton
Dalton's poetry is intense, and exudes revolution in every verse. Knowing a history of the poet's life and struggle, you get a greater feel and appreciation for all his work. His pain, love, and hate all mixed together delivers the most powerful poetry I've ever read. I enjoyed this book immensely, and recommend it to all of those that are a rebel at heart.

Must have for your collection
In Dalton's words you can hear his pain, loss and anger; but it's his love and romantic vision that you take away. I tresure this book and it stands as my most read book.
